Cartoon of the politics of the Second Empire (Bonapartiste Regime) directed by Napoleon III (Charles Louis Napoleon Bonaparte, dit Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte, 1808-1873). “Freedom of the press”. Henri Rochefort (1831-1913), a French journalist and politician, commented: “The minister of the interior had told Hippolyte de Villemessant (1810-1879), my editor-in-chief that if he continued to let me circulate without a muzzle, Le Figaro would pay with his life this recklessness.” Rochefort left the newspaper “” Le Figaro”” in 1867 to found La Lanterne (“A lantern can be used both to enlighten honest people and to hang criminals”), whose first number appeared on 30 May 1868.
