Charles Aston Key, FRS, surgeon, c 1830. Stipple engraving by Francis Holl, c 1851, after a drawing by George Richmond. Charles Aston Key (1793-1849), a pupil of Astley Cooper, became a surgeon at Guy's Hospital in 1824. He was one of the first surgeons to use ether as an anaesthetic, gaining his reputation from a number of successful operations for lithotomy- the removal of kidney stones. He was a lecturer on surgery at Guy's Hopsital from 1825 to 1844, became Orator of the Hunterian Society in 1831, member of the Council of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1845, and surgeon to Prince Albert in 1847. ©SSPL/Science Museum
