Competitors in the Avon Descent, promoted as the world's greatest white water classic, find themselves stranded on rocks on the Avon River near the township of Northam, 100 kilometres east of Perth, August 4, 2001. The two-day, 133 kilometre race, involved a record field of over 700 competitors making their way down the river to the capital city of Perth in canoes, powerboats, kayaks and skis. The first race was run in 1973 as a trial to test the river as a potential transport route after the price of oil increased dramatically. DG/RCS
