Corner of the Dazey Kitchen', USA, 1939. Photograph by Dorothea Lange. The shelves are piled with all manner of pots, plates, jars and tins. On the top shelf are several boxes of breakfast cereals still familiar in the 21st century. As a member of the Farm Security Administration (FSA) photographic unit, Lange photographed migrant workers, sharecroppers, tenant farmers, and other victims of the Depression in the United States between 1935 and 1942 to add to the FSA's extensive record. Lange was particularly interested in photographing people in their social context. She captured the shift from small farming communities, to the urban mass culture created by World War Two. Lange also travelled to Vietnam, India and Pakistan to photograph other developing cultures and the people affected by them. ©SSPL/National Media Museum
