Image description

Denali Stud Farm owner Craig Bandoroff keeps his mares and foals out of pastures and away from field grasses in dirt corralls do to a mysterious illness that scientists now call "mare reproductive loss syndrome" at his stud farm in Paris, Kentucky, May 12, 2001. Throughout Central Kentucky farms, more than 500 foals have died from this illness that experts belived to be cause by toxins from molds growing on pasture grasses which have caused spontaneous abortions and stillbirths in mares whose pregnancies are coming to term. A study of the problem estimated losses in Kentucky alone could amount to $135 million if 20 percent of the expected crop of foal are lost. JPSTRA
