Diesel engine for Rhodesia, Preston, 1956. A 114 ton, 1170 hp, DE2 diesel in the final stages of production. This is part of a batch of 23 ordered by Rhodesia Railways built at The Kerr Works in Preston.The Kerr works had developed from carriage and tram production into railway engines. The DE2 was suited to the challenges of service on the rigorous African continent. Its heavy weight meant that extra wheels were fitted to spread the load. Some of the engines gave 40 years service, clocking up 2 million miles of travel.
