Drawings made in secret by women from a women's camp in Indonesia about their living conditions.
Drawings made in secret by women from a women's camp in Indonesia about their living conditions, 1942. The narration translates as follows:
We arrived here, our first camp. At first sight not such a bad building. It was an old school building with a big yard where the children could play. We had to share one tap between 370 people. We were allowed to fill one bucket per day for drinking and washing, endlessly waiting our turn. In the yard we constructed bamboo boxes for the smallest children. The older children had to work the land with the adults.
We worked a shift system and the Japanese guards invented all manner of methods to humiliate us in front of the local people. In the sleeping quarters we had an area of 1.60m, just enough for a bed. Our only private space. Everything had to be shared and everone gossiped and meddled in each others affairs, work, children, food. We had no news from our husbands , life was work, wait and queuing.
3 toilet’s were shared between all of us and we had to queu every morning, we called it the pot parade. To break the routine we invented silly names for all sorts of tasks. We intervened when women broke down and started hitting the children for no reason. The children adapted faster to the situation than the adults. I had a pale of water in my hands when the camp commander was passing. I had to bow and spilled the water on his boots. I got whipped.
Our servants did not abandon us and endagered their own life’s by giving us food through the barbed wire fence. The children were always first.
