Sewn by English women probably in Kent to a Norman brief, the embroidery illustrates the events leading to the Norman invasion and conquest of England by an army led by Duke William of Normandy and the death of King Harold at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. The Norman army rides out with William at the head, carrying a mace (see 161964 for detail) A messenger called Vital who has seen Harold's movements from a hill, rides back to give William information
