FOR RELEASE WITH STORY BC:MALAYSIA-ELECTION-ISLAM - Malaysia's opposition leader of the Parti Islam se-Malaysia (PAS), Nik Aziz Nik Mat (R) is greeted by party members during the party's political rally in Kota Bharu, in the state of Kelantan. Nik Aziz, locally known as "Tok Guru" which means "Head Guru," for his strong Islamic background, is the Chief Minister of Kelantan. Kelantan, located in the north-eastern reaches of Peninsular Malaysia is the only province ruled by the Islamic fundamentalist PAS. For a decade the rice bowl next to Thailand has been PAS political green house. With state and federal election looming on November 29, PAS sees Kelantan as a springboard for an assault on neighbouring states where Muslim Malays and a rural way of life predominate.
