Image description

Federal Battery No1...', Virginia, USA, May 1862. Albumen print of the heavy gun battery at Yorktown, Virginia, by Alexander Gardener (1821-1882) from a negative produced by Wood and Gibson (active 1860s). These heavy guns were used during the inconclusive siege by Union forces of Yorktown between 5 April and 4 May 1862. A small Confederate force in the town stopped a much larger Union army from marching on the Confederate capital at Richmond. As well as 100,000 troops, General George McLellan's Federal army assembled what was then the largest concentration of artillery ever seen. Seeing the concentration of force against them, the Confederates withdrew from Yorktown on the night of 3rd-4th May. From the album assembled by John Downes Rochfort who visited all the major American Civil War sites in 1867. ©SSPL/National Media Museum
