Guerre des Boers (Afrique du Sud, 1899-1902): 'Guns of the 75th Royal Field Artillery in Barracks, Pretoria, South Africa', 1901. One of a boxed set of stereoscope photographs produced for sale to the general public by a professional firm of photographers, Underwood and Underwood. The Second Boer War (1899-1902) was the first war to be covered comprehensively by both film and still photography. This was the result of improved technology in both photographic equipment and printing techniques; cameras were more portable and magazines reproduced half-tone photographs. Pretoria, the capital of the Boer Republic of the Transvaal fell to the British on 5th June 1900. The war continued for a further two years however, as the Boer commandos adopted guerrilla tactics to harrass the numerically superior British forces.¿ ©SSPL/National Media Museum
