HEADLINES OF AFTERNOON NEWSPAPERS DISPLAYED ON NEWS PAPER STAND, 1998-10-28 (photo)

Chilean afternoon newspapers are on display next to international magazines with the headlines reading: "Pinochet won" and " Ruling in favor of Pinochet," at a newspaper stand in downtown Santiago October 28. The British High Court quashed a Spanish extradition warrant that had ex-dictator Augusto Pinochet under arrest. Judge Lord Bingham, said that Pinochet was entitled to immunity bcause he was serving as head of state at the time of the alleged crimes. Pinochet was arrested at the request of Spanish judge Baltasar Garzon, who wants him extradited to stand trial for genocide and torture of Spanish citizens during the 17-year long Chilean dictatorship.
