Ice man, 1932 (b/w photo)

Iceman. A profession that was usually a man, who delivered ice blocks to households, above all to ice cabinets. When the ice melted, you got a new block of ice. It was primarily companies, hotels, restaurants and finer homes that needed the ice blocks until the 1950s. The ice was needed to keep food items cold so they would last. The blocks of ice could weigh up to 50 kg. In the cities there were companies that collected ice in the winter and stored and sold the blocks of ice in the summer. This was before refrigerators were introduced to the public in the 1950s. Some professions have become redundant over time, ice man is one such profession. Photo taken in 1932.
