JAILED FARC GUERRILLA STARES OUT OF GUARD POST INSIDE LA MODELO PRISON, 1999-10-20 (photo)

TO ACCOMPANY STORY BC COLOMBIA-GUERRILLAS - A jailed member of Colombia's FARC guerrilla group mounts guard duty in a lookout post intended for police and prison wardens overlooking the exercise yard of Bogota's La Modelo prison as his comrades hold an event to celebrate the anniversary of the death of rebel icon Ernesto Che Guevara. For Armed Revolutionary Forces of Colombia guerrillas, prison is another "trench" in their long-running uprising. They refer to themselves as prisoners of war and vow they will never surrender in the fight to topple the state and usher in a socialist regime. The FARC's supreme commander is demanding that the governemnt releases some 450 jailed rebels in return for the release of 350 security force members captured in fighting over the last two years.
