James' Barry MD, Army surgeon, c 1850. Pencil and wash drawing of James Barry (1785-1865) in uniform. Barry was an Army surgeon, but after death was apparently found to have been a woman, although some theories suggest he/she was a hermaphrodite. Barry served for 40 years in the British army during which time he served as a skilled doctor and surgeon, performing one of the first Caesarian sections. Barry was also a vegetarian and an abolitionist. Women were not allowed to train to be medical doctors, let alone practice, and it was not until 1865, when Elizabeth Garrett passed the examination of the Society of Apothecaries, that a woman was recognised as a doctor in the UK.
