LAGRANDS FOSTER PARENTS DURING BURIAL CEREMONY, 1999-03-09 (photo)

James and Betty Barstow, foster parents of Karl LaGrand, bow in prayer during the burial ceremony of Karl's brother Walter at the state prison cemetary, March 8. Senior prison chaplain Errol Grant, (R), bows his head as Minister L. Ignacio Gameros reads a prayer. Walter, who was executed in the gas chamber March 3 for the murder of a bank manager in Marana, Arizona in 1982, was buried next to his brother Karl who was executed by lethal injection for the same crime on February 24. Seven other prison officials attended the ceremony. The LaGrand's are buried with approximately 300 other prisoners who have died or have been executed at the prison since 1910.
