The General Assembly of the Kirk of Scotland (Church of Scotland) 1783. The assembled clergy wear white wigs and dark gowns. They are seated in rows and talk amongst each other or read from sheets of paper. The High Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, David Melville, 6th Earl of Leven (1722 - 1802) sits on a raised platform on the right. Beneath him, a man carries a ceremonial mace. In the upper gallery men and women look down on the scene below. Etching by David Allan.
