Mexico City Mayor Cuauhtemoc Cardenas raises the flag to half staff October 2 to commemorate the killing of students in Tlatelolco square thirty years ago. Mexicans will mark one of the darkest chapters in their modern history when, ten days before the inauguration of the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, troops and police opened fire on student protesters, leaving up to 300 dead according to some accounts. The massacre quashed the student movement of the time, and became a taboo subject as authorities censored the press and swept the event under the carpet. HR/ELD/KM
