Photographic close-up of the Sun, 10 May 1878. Photograph of a close-up of the Sun showing granulation, fine detail fine on the solar surface. Pierre Jules Cesar Janssen (1824-1907), a French astronomer, took this image on the 10th May 1878 from the Meudon Observatory, Paris. This early photograph of the Sun was taken using a wet collodion plate with its poorly light sensitive film emulsion. Despite the brightness of the Sun it needed an exposure of many seconds through the telescope to record a usable image. ©SSPL/Science Museum
