U.S. President Bill Clinton reaches for Vice President Al Gore's shoe as Gore was being introduced prior to a speech on the Year 2,000 computer problem at the National Academy of Sciences, July 14. NAS President Bruce Alberts told the audience that at one time the only people who cared about the Year 2,000 computer problem were ones who "ate granola and wore sandals", after which President Clinton checked Gore's shoes to see if he was wearing sandals. Clinton and Gore both urged businesses to start concentrating on ways to solve the Year 2,000 computer meltdown problem. LR/RC/EB
