PROTESTERS USE U.S. AND CHINESE FLAGS TO ILLUSTRATE TAIWAN'S POSITION, 1998-06-27 (photo)

Activists opposed to Taiwan's reunion with communist China, use American and Chinese flags and a small model of Taiwan June 27 in Taipei to depict the Nationalist-ruled island's precarious position between the two Pacific superpowers. The display was part of a mass rally in downtown Taipei following the U.S.-China summit in Beijing. Taiwan's government expressed gratitude that U.S. President Bill Clinton kept his promise not to alter U.S. policy toward Taiwan, but many Taiwan people fear Washington might "sell out" Taiwan by agreeing to Beijing's demands that it stop selling arms to the island.
