QUECHUAN INDIAN FAMILY STAND WITH ALL THEIR BELONGINGS AFTER QUAKE, 1998-05-25 (photo)

The Alcoser family of Quechua Indian origin stand on their land in this Andean valley May 23 with all their personal belongings salvaged from their house destroyed by an earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale that shook this region May 22. At least 80 percent of the town is in ruins and 85 people are dead. As the search for more victims in the countryside comes to an end, South America's poorest nation will try with its own scarce resources and international aid to start the job of rebuilding the region after the most destructive earthquake to hit Bolivia this century.
