Image description

RCA colour television receiver, type CTC 161, c 1965. Radio Corporation of America colour television adapted for UK operation. The BBC first experimented with colour television in the 1950s using the NTSC system developed by the RCA. This had to be modified from the American 525 line system it was developed for to the 405 line system used at this time for black-and-white television in the UK. The BBC later decided that their colour system should be 625 line, in accordance with the rest of Europe, and selected the PAL system to replace NTSC. The first colour television broadcast in the UK was in 1967 but the complete transition from monochrome to colour, and from the 405 line to 625 line scanning system took several decades.
