Reconstruction of a Roman Horse Race at the Hippodrome Stadium, Caesarea, Israel, 2008 (photo)

The hippodrome was built during the reign of King Herod, in the 1st century BC. It stretches along the coastline and was originally surrounded by stone bleachers that could accommodate over 10,000 spectators. Paintings of animals and hunting scenes were discovered on the surrounding walls, perhaps inspired by the activity that took place here. In the northern section of the arena starting chambers were unearthed, indicating that the hippodrome was used for chariot and horse races. During the holidays the ancient hippodrome hosts horse shows and festivals. Saint Peter and Saint Paul passed through Caesarea, and Paul was imprisoned here for two years until he was brought to Rome.
