Sir Felix Semon, German physician, 1902. Chromolithograph by Vincent Brooks Day & Son Ltd of a caricature by Leslie Ward, better known as Spy, from 'Vanity Fair' magazine. Sir Felix Semon (1849-1921) developed the modern operation of laryngofissure for cancer of the larynx, and also introduced the treatment of vocal rest for laryngeal tuberculosis. He was born in Berlin, Germany, where he completed his medical studies in 1872. Moving to London in 1874, he worked as a physician first at the Golden Square Throat Hospital and then at St. Thomas's Hospital. In 1893 he founded the Laryngological Society of London. He was honoured with the title of 'Royal Prussian Professor' by the German emperor in 1894, and in 1901 he was appointed 'Physician Extra-Ordinary' to King Edward VII.
