Soldier wearing Arctic equipment, 1940 A photograph of a soldier wearing full Arctic dress, taken by Bishop Marshall for the Daily Herald newspaper on 22 April, 1940. The soldier wears a white jacket, trousers and hat for camouflage whilst fighting in snow. He wears snow shoes and carries a pair of skis. Somewhat incongruously, he is standing on the roof of a building in London - probably the offices of the Daily Herald. This soldier was photographed to show the equipment issued to the British Expeditionary Force sent to Norway in April 1940. The Norwegian campaign was a failure and troops had to be evacuated later that year. This photograph has been selected from the Daily Herald Archive, a collection of over three million photographs.
