Image description

Varlin in his studio in Bondo, Bergell - in the background the picture “The Salvation Army”. Varlin, a painter and draughtsman born on 16 March 1900 in Zurich, with the civil name Willy Guggenheim, is one of the great portraitists of the 20th century. Varlin studied at the Staatliche Kunstgewerbeschule in Berlin and in Paris, where he felt more at home than in the hate-loved city of Zurich. In the thirties he returned to Switzerland with a French painting culture trained in van Gogh, Soutine and the “Nahis”. Varlin died on 30 Oct 1977 in Bondo, Bergell. (see sfd001)
