Benedictional of St. Aethelwold Author: Godeman, scribe / Winchester; 971-984 Language: Latin Source/Shelfmark: Add. 49598, f.5v [Whole folio] Preface to the blessing for the First Sunday in Advent. The Annunciation. The Angel appears to the Virgin, who is seated under a domed baldachino, a symbol of the heavens, indicating her eminence as the Mother of Christ. She is shown reading, with her right hand on an open book, and holding a golden object in her left hand. The Angel's right hand is raised in benediction, and he bears a sceptre in his left hand. The miniature is surrounded by a frame of 'Winchester' acanthus, with four bosses. Image taken from Benedictional of St. Aethelwold. Originally published/produced in Winchester; 971-984.
