Benedictional of St. Aethelwold Author: Godeman, scribe / Winchester; 971-984 Language: Latin Source/Shelfmark: Add. 49598, f.15v (Whole folio) Preface to the first blessing for Christmas Day; the Nativity. The Virgin is reclining on a tilted bed, with Joseph seated at the foot. Unusual details include the crib, which is shown on the nearside of the bed, the pillow under Christ's head, and the midwife arranging the cushion under the Virgin's head.The scene is surrounded by a frame of 'Winchester' acanthus, with round bosses at the corners Image taken from Benedictional of St. Aethelwold.
