Sewn by English women probably in Kent to a Norman brief, the embroidery illustrates the events leading to the Norman invasion and conquest of England by an army led by Duke William of Normandy and the death of King Harold at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. Duke William's fleet packed with men and horses sails from Saint Valery to Pevensey. His ship is towards the front with a lantern on the mast. (see 155377 & 323474 for details)
