Sewn by English women probably in Kent to a Norman brief, the embroidery illustrates the events leading to the Norman invasion and conquest of England by an army led by Duke William of Normandy and the death of King Harold at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. William's fleet arrives on the Sussex coast, at Pevensey, where the soldiers unload and disembark. The knights, including Wadard, pillage the countryside and round up animals to eat.
