Henry Hoare I (1677 - 1725)

A three-quarter-length portrait of Henry Hoare I, who bought Stourhead estate and employed Colen Campbell to build the house, standing to the right. He is wearing a brown coat with buttons on the cuffs and chest. The coat is open slightly to reveal a matching waistcoat. He wears a long, grey powdered wig, a white stock around his neck and the frills of a white shirt are visible at the wrists. The base of a stone column fills the space behind the sitter to the right and he leans against and rests his right elbow on a stone pedestal at the left. In his right hand, Henry Hoare holds a partly unfurled scroll of plans for the façade of Stourhead. He gestures towards the right with his left hand, his index finger pointing downwards.
