Gentleman with long grey hair, moustache and goatee beard, wearing black clothes with white collar, seated at lhs of table with red cover, holding a book Objects on table - a medal of Caesar (a medal inscribed CAROLUS MAGNUS REX BRITTANIAE, 5 coins, an open book and 4 others, a silver jar with jewels, fob watch and key with blue ribbon, two-handled pot with silver mount, columnar candlestick, fruit, two-handled cup of half ostrich egg with mount, and two drop pearls. The most ambitious of the pioneering English still-lifes painted by this amateur artist in the manner of Pieter van Roestraeten (c.1730-1700), who had settled in England in the 1670's.
