Image description

Pandon stood to the east of Newcastle and was originally a small medieval settlement which became a centre for a number of unpleasant trades such as tanning and soap-making. The medieval, half-timbered buildings in this watercolour were combined houses, workshops, and warehouses. The outsized doors in the roofs led to warehouse-attic areas. To cross Newcastle it was often necessary to negotiate streets such as these.
