Lee-Hankey, William drawing, pencil and watercolour on paper (Japanese), entitled Mother's Pet, , entitled Lozette et Pierre, by the artist William Lee-Hankey This picture was painted in France, where William Lee-Hankey lived for several years from the early 1900s. He worked particularly in Normandy and Brittany, where he hoped to find scenes of unspoilt village life. The wooden clogs and rough skirt of this young woman show that she is a country girl. Lee-Hankey has chosen slightly rough, flecked paper to match the rural subject. Its surface breaks up the watercolour washes, increasing the atmospheric effect of the grey and green hues.
