On July 12, 1943 the two biggest armored combat units to be seen in the history of the war rolled onto the curved front line of Kursk. Because the Soviet leadership was informed about the time and battle strategy of the German attack, it was well prepared. A novelty in the history of the war was a German order, by which the tank commanders were forbidden to protect fallen tanks and to save the occupants, so that no time would be lost. Despite this they still lost the battle.
