3rd Earl of Bute commissioned Robert Adam (1728-92) to build Lansdowne House in 1762; it was sold unfinished to the Earl of Shelburne, later 1st Marquess of Lansdowne and completed from Adam's designs in 1768; the house was apparently photographed for Arthur Bolton's 'The Architecture of Robert and James Adam' in 1922; this view shows the original organ recess filled with a mirror and canape; the room was bought by the Philadelphia Museum of Art in 1930;
