Juliette Dodu (1848-1909) was a legendary heroine of the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, and the first woman to be awarded the Legion of Honor; Dodu had intercepted Prussian telegraph transmissions and given them to the French authorities, thus helping to hinder the German advance on Paris; after her capture by the Prussians and trial for espionage, she was pardoned by Frederick Charles of Prussia , known as the 'Red Prince', who shook her by the hand and said it was 'an honour to meet so brave a woman';
