F48 Bombay Castle, 1731 (oil on canvas)

Bombay, c.1731. A large white building, with a high gateway surmounted by a coat of arms; this seems to be 'the Bunder or Company's Warehouses' marked in Grose's map (about 1760). In front, a pier projects into the harbour. On the right stands the castle, with the Union Jack floating from the Flagstaff Bastion; on the left are a number of warehouses. The foreground is occupied by shipping; a large boat with a triangular sail, is flying the Company's colours, a flag crossed by horizontal bars alternately red and white.
