'in gratitude to God and in commemoration of the Honourable Court of Directors granting him the arrears of his stipend in 1840' and opened in 1842. In front of the mosque are what remains of the 'extensive but ruinous' (Bishop Heber) Dhurrumtollah Bazaar, established in 1794, and on the right at the top of the Chowringhee Road is the corner of the Oil Bazaar. A procession bearing an image of Kali standing on a prostrate Siva approches from the Dhurrumtollah, while palanquins, carriages, an adjutant bird, all add to the Calcutta scene.
