Image description

The image seen on the front of this vessel, the double eagle of the Holy Roman Empire, was a popular form of Germanic glass decoration from the mid-sixteenth century through the seventeenth century. Beakers with this type of decoration were so treasured that bad fortune was thought to await anyone who broke one. Intended for special or ceremonial occasions, such elaborately decorated glasses were often the result of special commissions. This Humpen (German drinking vessel) is missing its cover.
