Java eiland Canal to Amsterdam, Netherlands, 1995. The four small canals, Brantasgracht, Lamonggracht, Majanggracht and Seranggracht, which cut the entire width of Java eiland are 1.50 m below the level of the docks. Some of them seem to be quite wrong. They were designed by nineteen young architects, including Rene van Zuuk and Bjarne Mastenbroek. They were asked to interpret in their own way the concept of houses in the city centre of Amsterdam. The only requirement was that all buildings should be 4.50 m wide and have 4 to 5 levels.
