May 05, 1953 - Ship with 507 Aboard cut in two in craft. The British Rail ways steamer, Duke of York, (4190 tons), with 437 passengers and 70 crew, was cut in two in collision with the American cargo ship Haiti Victory (7607 tons), in the North Sea, 40 miles east of Harwich early this morning. After the collision the Haiti Victory drew alongside the Duke of York, took off most of her passengers and some of her crew, and later took her in two. The whole of the Duke of York's bow from forward the bridge broke off and sank. Two passengers, a woman and a child, were trapped in the crash.
