Rear of Alex Spittal's house, Seneschal Lane, Douglas, Isle of Man, 1932-34 (b/w photo)

On the back of this photograph John James Frowde writes, "The rear of Alex Spittal's big house, the front of which was in Seneschal Lane, no 14. This seen in another section. There was a back entrance to these premises, as seen in the print, into the Court and thence to Almshouse Lane. The house just seen on R, no 4, St Barnabas' Square, a large mansion, dated 1782, had a considerable area of yard at rear, but no exit other than the front door. These large dwellings were the homes of wealthy people, and at this time of day, what they did without essentials (these times) gives one furiously to think!"
