Image description

On the back of this photograph John James Frowde writes, "New Bond St. Looking W towards the market, on L nos 6a and 6. Next beyond, centre, behind lamp, what was some sixty odd years ago a noted (or notorious) hostelry, 'The Mahogany Bar Tavern': Now an annexe of the Clarendon Hotel on the Quay. The tall building in the background is the rear of the Douglas Hotel. This was built for his own residence by an opulent smuggler. After the Revestment in 1765, having 'got the wind up', he sold the house [vide Robertson's Tour 1798] to the fourth Duke of Athol for £300. The Duke was living in it in 1789, because Fannin's Map of that date gives an engraving, 'The view from His Grace the Duke of Atholl's residence' and the view comprises the two 'end on' houses on the S Quay, now the Manx Cargo Services. Formerly, Holmes Bank L and Hampton's R. At widely different periods."
