On the back of this photograph John James Frowde writes, "Route of this section:- Up Bond Lane, first turn left into Fairy Ground, return up Fairy Ground, and first turn left into the upper portion of Bond Lane. Return from Bond Lane and turn on left into Durie Lane, finishing at the end of same where it joined New Bond Street. 51 Coffee Palace, 53 Ship Inn, 55 Wm Gell's Druggist. Business bought by Mr Wm Brearey (?) in 1849." [Additional pencil annotations indicating numbering of buildings on photo]. Additional pencil comment on reverse says: "No 56 William Gill Druggist up to 1849 when Wm Brearey bought it. Story by Jas Roney (Jan 35). He said Corteen, late asst harbourmaster, had noticed that at high tides, when the water receeded, the water drawing out of the square hole below W. W? was distinctly red. W.A.B's discovery that Gill had made his red oxide of mercury ointment with red lead. This doubtless left in sand of cellar and still tinting the effluent."
