Image description

Contemporary Dutch broadside print depicting the execution of James Scott, first Duke of Monmouth and Buccleuch (1649-85) on Tower Hill, 15 July 1685 Monmouth was the illegitimate son of King Charles II (1660-85) and his mistress Lucy Walters. He was executed in 1685 for rebelling against his uncle, the new king, James II (1685-8). Even though Monmouth paid his executioner well, he did his job poorly and took five strokes to sever the Duke's head from his body. After the first stroke Monmouth was reportedly seen to raise his head in anguish, and this scene graphically depicts the protracted event Printmaker: Adriaan Schoonebeek (1657/58-1705)
