Image description

The large soundbox provides a good volume of sound audible in a busy pub or bar. To the right is the mechanism that returns the tone arm automatically back to the beginning of a played record, and automatically applies the brake. It is the mechanical equivalent of the automatic return on a modern record deck. The Mammut was one made by one of many German manufacturers between 1904 and 1911. It is a coin-operated automatic gramophone. The brake can only be released by the fall of a coin. This is a rare survivor of the many automatic phonographs and gramophones that preceded the jukebox. The user can wind up the motor and put a disc on the turntable, but the motor will not start until the coin is inserted. Once the tone arm reaches the centre of the record, the brake is automatically applied. Dimensions: Width: 445 mm Depth: 570 mm Height: 252 mm Horn mouth:550 mm Horn length: 682 mm
