Image description

Military Medal group awarded to Gunner Joseph Hogan, 8th Canadian Field Regiment, Royal Canadian Artillery. Medal group (from left to right): Military Medal 1944; 1939-45 Star; Italy Star; France and Germany Star; Defence Medal 1939-45; Canadian Volunteer Service Medal 1939-47, with clasp for overseas service; British War Medal 1939-45. Joseph Hogan received the Military Medal for gallantry in Italy on 15 October 1944, when he successfully extinguished a fire started by enemy shells on a troop ammunition dump, despite being badly burned himself. His prompt and courageous actions resulted in the saving of two guns and prevented a number of serious casualties. Thus, in the words of the citation ‘a reduction of the regiment’s fire power was prevented at a time when supporting fire was urgently required by our forward troops’.
