Halt! Who goes there?’ 1915. Colour photolithograph recruiting poster, artist unknown. Published by the Parliamentary Recruitment Committee as poster No. 60, printed by Hill, Siffken and Company, London, 1915. A British infantryman, on sentry duty, holding rifle with fixed bayonet and silhouetted against the sky, addresses the potential recruit. Propaganda posters like this played a key role in persuading men to sign up as soldiers. Often they showed images of women and children who needed protection. Others showed examples of alleged German atrocities in France and Belgium.
